Last Night
Last night I dreamt you held me
We pressed flesh and were as one
Your breath was as a warm wind giving succour
You were soft to the touch, yielding and enveloping
Last night I dreamt you held me
My mind was not troubled but,
Knowing discomfort would untangle us
I wished for sleep that I would not live the moment
Last night I dreamt you held me
I imagined and mapped the contours of your body
Every mark, line and shape I knew intimately
Adoring all in equal measure
Last night I dreamt you held me
Without poison or hidden agenda
Your feelings were as open as a book to be read
And I fell eagerly upon every word
Last night I dreamt you held me
I loved you then as I love you now
With a naivety that would remain
Throughout your ossification
Last night I dreamt you held me
But when I awoke, we were not there
